The bite is initially painless but can develop into a necrotic wound requiring medical treatment. Brown recluses prefer undisturbed harborage areas — inside stored boxes, behind shelving, in rarely used closets, and in attic insulation. They are present in Columbia but less common than in their central Midwestern native range.

Wolf spiders are large, fast-moving, and frequently mistaken for brown recluses by Columbia homeowners.
