Norway Rat
Heavy-bodied ground dwellers that burrow along foundations, under decks, and in crawl spaces. Concentrated along the restaurant and commercial corridors of Glenwood South, Hillsborough Street, Six Forks Road and Capital Boulevard. Can gnaw through plastic pipes, soft concrete, and electrical insulation.
Roof Rat
Slender, agile climbers that enter through rooflines, attic vents and overhanging branches and nest in attic insulation and wall voids. NC State confirms the behavioral split, that roof rats prefer to travel along elevated areas while Norway rats spend much of their time underground, but is worth being straight about the geography: we have found no source establishing roof rat populations in the North Carolina Piedmont. So attic activity in Wake County is worth identifying rather than assuming.
House Mouse
The most widespread rodent across Raleigh residential areas. Forget the coin comparisons: a mouse needs a gap of about a quarter of an inch, far smaller than people picture and smaller than a dime is wide. Extension sources put a female at five to ten litters a year of five or six young each, reaching breeding age themselves in six to ten weeks, which is why a small problem stops being small so quickly.
Deer Mouse
Turns up on the rural and semi-rural edges of Wake County rather than in built-up Raleigh. It is one of the hantavirus reservoirs in North America along with the white-footed mouse, rice rat and cotton rat, but that needs proportion rather than alarm: of roughly 890 US cases recorded since 1993, about 94% occurred west of the Mississippi. Note also that CDC does not list Norway or roof rats as carriers of the hantavirus that causes HPS. Enters structures in autumn seeking warmth, and is identified by two-tone coloring, brown above and white below.

Downtown Raleigh & Glenwood South: Norway Rats & House Mice
Downtown holds most of the small share of genuinely old building stock in an otherwise new county: only 3.7% of Raleigh homes predate 1950. Settled crawl spaces, aged utility penetrations and old brickwork give the highest entry-point density in the metro, and both Norway rats and house mice turn up here. Dense mixed-use blocks with restaurants at street level and flats above are the classic Norway rat setting, since the food source and the harborage sit in the same building.
Oakwood, Boylan Heights & Cameron Park: Older Stock
Raleigh’s National Register districts are where the classic old-house rodent problem actually applies. Oakwood was listed in 1974, and Boylan Heights, Cameron Park and Glenwood-Brooklyn were all listed on the same day in July 1985. Established plantings give ground-level harborage along fence lines and foundation beds, and deteriorated crawl space vent screens are the entry point we find most often on houses of this age. Mice need only a quarter-inch gap to use them.
Glenwood South, Hillsborough Street & Six Forks: Norway Rats
Raleigh’s dense restaurant and bar corridors are Norway rat territory, sustained by commercial food waste in grease traps, dumpster runs and loading docks rather than by anything happening in nearby houses. Residential properties within a few blocks see consistent spillover, and it tends to sharpen in autumn when outdoor dining winds down and the easy food supply drops away. This is a burrowing species: SC and NC wildlife sources both describe Norway rats spending much of their time underground, along foundations and under decks.
Apex & Holly Springs: Displacement From New Building
This is the Wake County rodent story that has nothing to do with old houses. The county permitted 13,806 new housing units in 2025 and gains roughly 66 residents a day, and Apex and Holly Springs are among the fastest-growing towns in the state, with 69.4% and 77.4% of their housing built since 2000. Land clearing pushes ground-nesting rodents into whatever is next door, and brand-new homes are not exempt: unsealed utility penetrations behind the siding are a common entry point in the first year or two after a build.
North Raleigh & Wake Forest: Attic Activity
Larger wooded lots and mature canopy give any climbing animal a route straight to the roofline, and attic entry through damaged soffits and vents is the most common complaint we get in northern Wake County. Worth identifying what is actually up there before treating. NC State notes roof rats prefer to travel along elevated areas while Norway rats spend much of their time underground, but we have found no source establishing roof rat populations in the Piedmont, so attic noise here is more often mice or squirrels. If it is nocturnal, southern flying squirrels are the usual answer, and they are the only squirrel active at night.
Cary & Morrisville: Garages, Outbuildings and Turnover
Cary has the oldest stock of the big western towns at 12.0% built before 1980, while Morrisville is the only Wake town where renters outnumber owners at 54.6% of occupied homes. That combination gives you both routes at once: older detached garages, sheds and outbuildings that get overlooked entirely during DIY attempts, and high-turnover rental units where a problem gets reported late. House mouse pressure across both is typical of suburban Wake County, and the exclusion work matters more than the trapping.

Small dark pellets along baseboards, in cabinets, behind appliances, or in attic spaces. Mouse droppings are rice-sized; rat droppings are larger.
Gnaw Marks
On wood trim, food packaging, electrical wiring, insulation, and HVAC ducting. Rat gnaw marks are larger and rougher than mouse damage.
Scratching Sounds
Particularly at night, in walls, ceilings, or attic spaces; roof rats are most active after dark and tend to move in predictable paths.
Grease Marks
Dark smear marks along walls and baseboards where rodents repeatedly travel the same path. Particularly visible near entry points and along joists.
Nesting Material
Shredded insulation, paper, fabric, or plant material gathered in hidden areas, inside wall voids, attic corners, or beneath appliances.
Disturbed Food
Gnawed corners on boxes, bags, or pantry items. Rodents often target cereals, pet food, and cooking oils stored in lower cabinets or garages.
Pet Behavior Changes
Dogs and cats pawing at walls or showing unusual interest in specific areas like baseboards, under cabinets, or around the HVAC closet.
Tracks or Runways
Footprints or tail drag marks in dusty areas like the attic or basement. A flashlight held at a low angle often reveals runway trails in insulation.

What Actually Works on Wake County Rodents, and What Does Not
Rodent advice is full of numbers that sound right and are not. These four change the outcome, and each one is checkable.
Forget the Coin Comparisons
You will read that a mouse fits through a hole the size of a dime. A dime is about seven tenths of an inch across, nearly three times the real figure, and that error makes the advice useless because it tells you to ignore the gaps that matter. The measurements extension sources actually give are a quarter of an inch for a mouse, a quarter of an inch for a juvenile rat and half an inch for an adult rat. Seal everything over a quarter inch, using copper or stainless wool packed tight, quarter-inch mesh or sheet metal. They chew straight back through expanding foam, and ordinary steel wool rusts away.
Here It Is Construction, Not Decay
In most markets the rodent argument is old housing and empty buildings. Wake County is the opposite on both counts: the median home was built in 2002, only 16.6% of the stock predates 1980, and the vacancy rate is 5.4% against 9.5% nationally, so there are relatively few empty buildings for populations to build up in. What there is instead is ground being opened continuously. The county permitted 13,806 new housing units in 2025 and gains roughly 66 residents a day. Two Things That Do Not Work, and One That Backfires
Ultrasonic repellers are the first. University of California IPM is blunt: rats quickly become accustomed to repeated sounds, which makes frightening devices including high frequency and ultrasonic sounds ineffective for controlling rats in homes and gardens. Cats are the second, and the same source notes predators cannot significantly control animals that colonise and reproduce as well as rats do, then adds the part people miss, that feeding cats outdoors provides a strong attractant and a continuous food source for rats and mice. The one that backfires is careless baiting: anticoagulants are cumulative, so a dead rat can hold several lethal doses and secondary poisoning of pets and wildlife is a real risk. The EPA has restricted the highest-risk second-generation anticoagulants from consumer sale for exactly that reason.
Do Not Sweep or Vacuum the Droppings
This is worth knowing before you touch anything, because the instinct is exactly wrong. The CDC advises against sweeping or vacuuming rodent urine, droppings or nesting material, since it puts contaminated particles into the air, and breathing that in is the main route by which rodent-borne disease reaches people. The method is to spray the area until very wet with a disinfectant or a bleach solution of one and a half cups of household bleach per gallon of water, leave it five minutes, then wipe up with paper towels. On hantavirus, keep it in proportion: of roughly 890 US cases since 1993, about 94% occurred west of the Mississippi, and the CDC does not list Norway or roof rats as carriers of the virus that causes it.
