No. A mosquito hawk is a crane fly, and no adult crane fly eats mosquitoes. Most adults eat nothing at all, or sip a little nectar, and live only long enough to mate and lay eggs. They cannot bite or sting you, they carry no disease, and the thing that looks like a stinger on the female is the tube she lays eggs with.
The reason they are all over your porch and windows in spring and late summer is light and damp lawn, not you. If you want fewer of them, the fix is in the soil and the screens, not in a spray.
What a mosquito hawk actually is
The names pile up: mosquito hawk, skeeter eater, mosquito eater, gallinipper, daddy longlegs. They all describe the same insect, a crane fly in the family Tipulidae. NC State Extension counts hundreds of crane fly species in North Carolina alone, and the Carolinas and Virginia share most of them. The big ones you notice have a wingspan around an inch and a half, a slender body up to an inch long, and legs so long and fragile that they snap off if you catch one, which is why so many arrive indoors with five legs.
A crane fly is not a mosquito and not closely related to one beyond both being flies. The resemblance is the long legs and the narrow body. The differences are the ones that matter to you.

What mosquito hawks actually eat
Adults: almost nothing. Some species take nectar or dew, and NC State's entomologists note it is thought that some do not feed at all. The Entomological Society of America has put it more bluntly: no one has ever found a predatory adult crane fly. The adults you see in spring and late summer have one job, which is to mate and lay eggs, and they do it fast. Females can lay eggs within a day of emerging and are dead within a week or two.
The larvae are a different animal. Called leatherjackets for their tough gray-brown skin, they live in the top inch or two of damp soil. NC State separates them by genus: leatherjackets in the genus Limonia are scavengers that live in rich, organic soil and compost and eat decaying matter, while those in the genus Tipula sometimes feed on the roots of seedlings and turf. That second group is the only reason a crane fly ever matters to a homeowner, and only when there are a lot of them. Do mosquito hawks bite or sting?
Neither. NC State's fact sheet says it plainly: crane flies have a short proboscis but are harmless to humans. They have no stinger. The pointed tip on a female's abdomen, the part people mistake for one, is her ovipositor, the tube she pushes into damp soil to lay eggs. She cannot use it on you. A crane fly that lands on your arm is lost, not hunting.
They do not carry disease either. NC State's turf specialists note that adults are not associated with transmitting human disease, which follows from the fact that they do not feed on blood. A dog or cat that eats one is fine.
Why they are all over your house
Two things bring crane flies to a home, and neither is food.
Light. Adults are drawn to porch lights, lit windows and glass doors after dark. That is why the swarm is on the screen and the wall beside the door, and why a few end up inside every time the door opens. They are weak fliers; NC State describes them as clumsy and notes they are most often seen resting on the side of a building rather than flying.
Damp lawn. Females lay in cool, moist soil and thatch, so a yard with poor drainage, daily irrigation or a thick thatch layer produces more adults every year. Across the Lowcountry and Hampton Roads the soil does much of that work on its own. In the Upstate the season runs later and colder. Either way, the adults on your porch came from within a few yards of where they were laid.
The two emergences
In our region you will notice them twice. NC State's turf publication describes adults emerging in summer, mating, and laying eggs in the thatch; the larvae feed through fall, overwinter, resume in spring and pupate just below the surface in early summer. In practice homeowners see a spring flight, often after a wet March or April, and a bigger late-summer one in August and September. The late-summer wave is the one that fills porch lights, and it is happening now across the Carolinas and Virginia.
If the county mosquito truck has been through and you are still seeing clouds of long-legged flies at the porch light, nothing failed. Mosquito fogging targets adult mosquitoes in the air after dark; it does not reach crane fly larvae in the soil and does not change how many adults emerge. How to keep mosquito hawks out of the house
Because adults are harmless and short-lived, the goal is exclusion and a quieter porch, not a kill. Spraying the ones you see does nothing about next week's, and vinegar or essential-oil sprays around windows evaporate in hours and have no effect on an insect that is not there to feed.
- Change the light. Swap white porch and floodlight bulbs for yellow "bug" bulbs or warm LEDs, which attract far fewer night-flying insects, or put exterior lights on motion sensors so they are off most of the evening. Close curtains and blinds on lit rooms during the spring and late-summer flights.
- Fix the screens. A crane fly needs a hole the size of a pencil. Patch or replace torn window and door screens, and check the screen door closes fully. This is where most of them get in.
- Seal the gaps. Weatherstripping around doors and windows, a door sweep on exterior doors, and caulk where trim meets siding. The same work keeps out the mosquitoes, wasps and stink bugs that use the same routes.
- Dry the lawn edge. Water deeply and infrequently rather than every evening, fix downspouts and low spots that stay wet, and dethatch. Damp soil against the house is where the next generation is laid. Our home remedies guide goes through the yard side in detail.
- Vacuum the ones inside. They die within days regardless. A vacuum or a cup and a card gets them back outdoors without a mess of legs on the wall.
When it is worth calling someone
Almost never for the adults. Call when a lawn is visibly thinning in spring and a turf count shows leatherjackets well above the university threshold, when damage returns every year despite corrected watering and drainage, or when birds and skunks are tearing up the yard to dig for larvae, since that secondary digging usually does more harm than the larvae themselves.
