Knightdale’s pest pressure comes from two very different forces pulling in opposite directions: a small downtown left over from its railroad depot days, chartered by the legislature on March 9, 1927, and the new subdivisions that have absorbed more than 3,600 additional residents since the 2020 Census.
Homes built near the original depot along Railroad Street and First Avenue have had a hundred years for pest pressure to settle in, mature trees, aging foundations, and established colonies of pests that a newer home simply hasn’t had time to develop. Meanwhile, the Mingo Creek Greenway follows the creek 3.5 miles from Mingo Creek Park to the Neuse River through the River District on the town’s western edge, where the Town’s plan describes bottomland and hardwood swamp forest, a wetter, shadier setting with different mosquito and tick pressure than the drier, newer subdivisions nearby.
