The Tabb, Grafton, and Seaford corridor along U.S. Route 17, the stretch of York County that has grown fastest since the late 20th century, rounds out the picture with a more standard suburban mix of ants, roaches, and fall rodents. Treating all of Yorktown the same way misses what each of these areas is actually dealing with.

The habitat next door is in measurably poorer shape than the postcard suggests, and that matters for pest pressure. The Park Service’s condition assessment scored Colonial National Historical Park’s natural resources at 40% of desired thresholds overall — on the border between “degraded” and “fair” — with its non-tidal wetlands at 26% and tidal wetlands at 34%, both rated degraded, and forest the healthiest at 58%. Degraded, fragmented, invaded habitat tends to favor generalist species: deer, rodents, and the insects that follow disturbed ground. That is a different neighbor from an intact forest, and it is why treatment here concentrates on the boundary between your property and the park.
