Why Pest Control in Lyman Isn’t One-Size-Fits-All

Lyman’s pest pressure comes down to how genuinely different the parts of this small Spartanburg County mill town are from one another. The community first grew up around a general store owned by Augustus Belton Groce, which opened in the mid-1870s and led locals to call the area Groce’s Stop. In 1923, the Groce family sold more than 700 acres to Pacific Mills, and by the following year the Lyman Printing and Finishing Mill had been built; by 1927, Pacific Mills had constructed 375 homes to house its workforce, complete with indoor plumbing and sewer service that was a rarity anywhere in South Carolina at the time. The town was renamed for Arthur T. Lyman, a former president of the mill, and Lyman was incorporated in 1954. The last mill in town closed in 2005. McMakin’s Tavern, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974, predates the mill town entirely and anchors Lyman’s older downtown core.

Historic downtown Lyman, centered on the McMakin’s Tavern area, carries the town’s oldest, most established construction, giving pests the aging entry points that kind of construction tends to create. The Pacific Mills village surrounding downtown carries closely-built, century-old cotton mill housing with its own aging-construction pest pressure tied to a hundred years of continuous occupancy. Ridge Road, set aside for the mill’s executive staff and built from the same materials as the surrounding worker housing but on a larger scale, carries a similar aging-construction profile in bigger, older homes. Lyman sits along the I-85 corridor near Duncan and Wellford, and the commercial and through-traffic pressure along that corridor brings its own set of pest concerns. And the rural Spartanburg County fringe surrounding Lyman carries a more agricultural set of conditions tied to well and septic systems and open farmland that the denser parts of town don’t see.
