Why Portsmouth Exterminator Calls Vary So Much by Block

Olde Towne and Downtown sit on a street plan laid out in 1752, built up chiefly through the Federal and Greek Revival years, and those dense blocks near the Norfolk Naval Shipyard hand roaches and rodents old construction and shared walls to travel through undetected. Portsmouth’s housing was shaped by two wars and very little since, and that is most of what decides a first visit here. The City’s own record is blunt about the first: the outbreak of the First World War “brought thousands of shipyard workers to Portsmouth and with them, a boom in housing construction and creation of the Villages of Cradock and Truxton” — Cradock, along Paradise Creek, being one of the first planned communities built anywhere in the United States. The Second World War added another wave; the 1940s alone account for about 12% of today’s stock, the largest wartime share of any city we cover here. Altogether roughly 65% of Portsmouth predates 1980 and only about 7% has gone up since 2010. Whole streets were built in one batch, and they age in one batch.
