Why Pest Control in Inman Isn’t One-Size-Fits-All

Inman’s pest pressure comes down to how genuinely different the parts of this small Spartanburg County town are from one another. The City’s 2021 Downtown Master Plan says the City was founded by the railroad. The plan’s “Storylines for Downtown”, stories residents shared at a workshop, place the town’s origins at the intersection of Blackstock and Howard streets, name two founding families, the Gowans, who had the land, and the Bishops, whose 30 acres were given to the railroad, and record that Inman was built in 1876 or 1877 and incorporated in 1882. The same storylines say that in the 1930s Inman was the fresh peach capital of the world because 100 boxcars of fresh peaches were loaded there in 24 hours. Inman Mills is a close walk from downtown, and the storylines note that Saybrook is still operating, alongside the apartments.

The historic crossroads around SC-292 and US-176 carries Inman’s oldest, most established construction downtown, giving pests the aging entry points that kind of construction tends to create. The old Inman Mills village near downtown carries closely-built, older mill housing with its own aging-construction pest pressure. Inman residents also have access to nearby Lake Bowen, and the shoreline vegetation around that lake brings water-adjacent moisture and wildlife-corridor conditions the rest of Inman doesn’t see to the same degree. The City’s plan places Inman just off I-26, and the commercial and through-traffic pressure along that interstate brings its own set of pest concerns. And the rural Spartanburg County fringe toward the North Carolina state line carries a more agricultural set of conditions tied to well and septic systems and open farmland that the denser parts of Inman don’t see.
