Why Ant Control in Woodruff Isn’t One-Size-Fits-All

A lot of pest control companies default to the same ant talking points everywhere, regardless of what’s actually driving activity on a given property. That’s a disservice in Woodruff, where a historic downtown built around an 1825 tavern crossroads, an early-1900s cotton mill village, a state highway corridor, a rural county fringe that once grew more than 200,000 peach trees, and the wooded country around an internationally known aeromodelling field each create genuinely different ant pressure.

Near historic downtown Woodruff and the old Woodruff’s Tavern crossroads, carpenter ants favor the wood-to-soil contact and aging construction common to the town’s oldest housing stock. In the cotton mill village built up around the old Woodruff Cotton Mill and the W.S. Gray Cotton Mill, odorous house ants are drawn to the persistent ground moisture found near more than a century of closely-spaced mill housing. Along the US-221 & SC-101/146 corridor, the Argentine ant is the more common species, forming massive interconnected colonies that thrive around commercial landscaping and through-traffic development. Out on the rural Spartanburg County fringe, where Woodruff’s farmland and former orchard land begin, the fire ant is the more common species, building mounds in sunny, open ground. And in the wooded country surrounding Triple Tree Aerodrome, carpenter ants show up again, but for a different reason than downtown — here it’s the dead and decaying trees and old stumps scattered through the surrounding woods, rather than aging construction, that give the species the moist, rotting wood it prefers to nest in.
