Carpenter Ant (Camponotus spp.)
Moisture-damaged wood, crawlspace framing, subfloor joists, window frames with water intrusion. The older, oak-canopied homes near Angel Oak and Main Road, with generations of accumulated wood moisture, at highest risk. Structural damage, excavate wood to create nesting galleries. Large black ants (0.5–1 inch) seen indoors in spring are often carpenter ants. Interior targeted treatment to wall voids plus exterior perimeter.
Heavy rain drives the indoor invasions, and on poorly drained clay it takes less rain than most places. When a summer storm saturates the soil around a foundation, established odorous house ant colonies flood indoors through the smallest gaps to escape the water, and on a working lot the same happens at the barn.
