Poquoson is more water than land in the ways that matter for pest work, and the calls sort cleanly by neighborhood. At Messick Point and the working waterfront, docks, marinas and seafood houses give rodents and roaches a direct route in off the boats and packing facilities — a different job entirely from anything inland.

Homes backing onto Plum Tree Island National Wildlife Refuge, a former bombing range now managed as protected marsh and scrub, sit against habitat that keeps ticks and salt-marsh mosquitoes active most of the year. That's a steady seasonal call we simply don't see in the newer subdivisions.

The Wythe Creek Road corridor, built up as Poquoson grew from a waterman's community into a Peninsula bedroom suburb, produces an ordinary suburban mix instead — ants, spiders, the occasional rodent. In the older watermen's neighborhoods, homes raised on elevated foundations after past flooding still carry the damp crawlspace conditions that keep termite and moisture calls coming in.

Poquoson is unusual among the cities we serve in that it has almost nowhere left to build, and that shapes the work. Virginia Cooperative Extension records that 51% of the city’s landmass is wetland, and the Census bears out the consequence: the single biggest building decade here was the 1970s at 22% of the stock, about 57% of housing predates 1980, and under 6% has gone up since 2010. The population has grown just 2.6%. So this is not a city of new subdivisions — it is a fishing village core, a 1970s suburban build-out that followed cityhood, and very little since, all of it wedged between marsh on one side and marsh on the other. The buildings age in place, and the marsh edge never moves away from them.
