Why Pest Control in Chesapeake Isn’t One-Size-Fits-All

Chesapeake is a young city built from old places. It was formed in 1963 by merging the independent city of South Norfolk with the rest of Norfolk County, a jurisdiction that traces its own roots back to 1691. That merger is exactly why Chesapeake still feels like several different towns stitched together rather than one uniform suburb — because that’s precisely what it is. Great Bridge, on the Southern Branch of the Elizabeth River, was the site of the Battle of Great Bridge in December 1775, an early Revolutionary War engagement fought near the same Intracoastal Waterway locks that still carry boat traffic today, and the area retains a meaningful amount of older, established construction near the water. South Norfolk, the former independent city itself, kept the dense, closely-built urban character that a century of separate municipal history left behind. Deep Creek, in the city’s southwestern reaches, sits beside a substantial portion of the Great Dismal Swamp National Wildlife Refuge and along the Dismal Swamp Canal — surveyed in part by George Washington and still the oldest continuously operating man-made canal in the United States — which means the wetland moisture here is a genuine, daily factor rather than an occasional one. Greenbrier, by contrast, is Chesapeake’s newer commercial engine: malls, office parks, and apartment communities that bring an entirely different set of pest pressures tied to dumpsters, loading docks, and dense multi-family housing. And Hickory, along with the rural country stretching south toward the Currituck and Camden County, North Carolina line, is still genuinely agricultural.

One termite note is worth knowing. The native eastern subterranean termite remains the established species throughout Chesapeake and across Virginia, and it is what our inspections are built around. Separately, the trade publication Pest Management Professional reported in October 2022 that a sample of Formosan subterranean termite alates and soldiers had been collected from a commercial structure in Norfolk and identified at the Rollins Support Center — a single confirmed detection, and the northernmost on record at the time. Formosan termites are not established in Virginia, and Virginia Tech and VDACS still name the eastern subterranean as the state’s termite species. It is simply one more reason annual termite inspections are worth scheduling regardless of a home’s age or which part of Chesapeake it sits in.
