Why Ant Control in Chesapeake Isn’t One-Size-Fits-All

A lot of pest control companies default to the same ant talking points everywhere, regardless of what's actually driving activity on a given property. That's a disservice in Chesapeake, where a Revolutionary War-era waterside district, a former independent city with a century of dense urban housing, a modern commercial corridor, a wetland bordering a national wildlife refuge, and working farmland toward the North Carolina line each create genuinely different ant pressure.

Near Great Bridge, carpenter ants favor the wood-to-soil contact and older, established construction common near the Intracoastal Waterway locks. Throughout South Norfolk, the dense, closely-built urban footprint left behind by the city's history as its own separate municipality gives pavement ants the sidewalk cracks, driveway joints, and foundation slabs this species prefers to nest beneath. Around Greenbrier, the pharaoh ant is the more common species, forming multi-queen, interconnected colony networks that thrive in the commercial landscaping surrounding malls, office parks, and apartment communities. Near Deep Creek and the Great Dismal Swamp Canal, odorous house ants are the more common concern, drawn to the wetland moisture that's a daily, year-round factor in this part of the city. And out around Hickory and the rural stretch of southern Chesapeake toward the North Carolina line, the fire ant is a documented, established threat: the federal government placed Chesapeake under an official Imported Fire Ant Quarantine in 2009, and Virginia Tech's Entomology Department continues to list Chesapeake among the Virginia cities with confirmed fire ant colonies. That's a level of established fire ant pressure that most of Virginia doesn't have to deal with, and it's a big part of why a one-size-fits-all ant treatment doesn't hold up here.

Two landscape facts sit behind most ant calls here. The first is the soil: the City flags high shrink-swell soils as poorly suited to foundations because the clay content swells and shrinks with moisture, and a foundation that moves seasonally keeps reopening the hairline routes ants use to get from soil to structure. The second is the vegetation. Chesapeake sits in the Southeastern Evergreen Forest Region, which the Commonwealth characterises as pine and pine-hardwood communities alongside large areas of swamp land — loblolly and pond pine, red maple, Atlantic white cedar. Damp softwood and declining hardwood close to a house is carpenter ant habitat, and the colony is usually in the wood outside rather than in your wall.
