And smoky brown cockroaches, a strong-flying species that favors mulch beds, log piles, and moist organic debris outdoors, are the more common concern around Hickory and the working farmland of rural southern Chesapeake, occasionally entering homes through attic vents and eaves.

Chesapeake’s ground works against you here in a specific way. The City classes 80 to 90 percent of its soils as hydric — saturated enough to indicate potential wetland — and describes surface drainage across much of the city as poor. Persistently damp ground beneath a crawlspace keeps humidity high in exactly the void where American and smoky-brown cockroaches prefer to live, and it keeps septic drainfields and drain lines in soil that stays wet. Those are outdoor populations that come inside through service penetrations rather than breeding in the kitchen, which is why a house that has been treated properly indoors can keep producing large roaches until the crawlspace and the exterior are addressed.
