Why Ant Control in Norfolk Isn’t One-Size-Fits-All

A lot of pest control companies default to the same ant talking points everywhere, regardless of what’s actually driving activity on a given property. That’s a disservice in Norfolk, where a 19th-century streetcar suburb, a bayfront resort community on sandy ground, a former independent industrial town, the world’s largest naval base, and a commercial retail corridor with mid-century subdivisions each create genuinely different ant pressure.

Throughout Ghent and downtown, the close-set Victorian and Colonial Revival housing built out in the 1890s along Norfolk’s original trolley lines gives carpenter ants the wood-to-soil contact and aging entry points this species favors. In Ocean View, the sandy, well-drained soil typical of a bayfront community developed since 1854 gives pavement ants exactly the loose, granular ground this species prefers to nest beneath, right under the sidewalks and driveways that line the neighborhood’s streets. Berkley, annexed into Norfolk in 1906 and still carrying the older, working-class housing stock left behind by its history as an independent town, sees more odorous house ant activity tied to aging plumbing and moisture intrusion than newer construction typically would. Around Naval Station Norfolk, Willoughby Spit, and Larchmont, the extensive mowed lawns and landscaped grounds connecting base housing and nearby rental properties give Argentine ants the irrigated, interconnected turf this invasive species uses to build multi-queen colony networks. And out toward Wards Corner and the Military Highway corridor, the mid-century subdivisions and commercial mulch beds common to that part of the city are exactly where little black ants tend to establish their colonies.

One more thing worth knowing directly, since it’s easy to get wrong from generic regional content: Virginia Tech’s Entomology Department maintains a documented list of Virginia cities with confirmed red imported fire ant populations, and it includes Chesapeake, Virginia Beach, Portsmouth, Suffolk, Hampton, and Newport News — every city that borders Norfolk. Norfolk itself, as of Virginia Tech’s most recent published list, does not yet appear among the confirmed cities. That’s a meaningfully different situation than what some broader Hampton Roads pest content implies when it lumps every city in the region into the same fire ant risk category. Vinx still recommends reporting any mound sightings in Norfolk promptly, since the species is actively expanding along the region’s transportation corridors, but the current, documented reality is that Norfolk sits just outside the confirmed range rather than inside it.

Construction era sorts the rest of the ant work about as reliably as neighborhood does. Roughly two-thirds of Norfolk’s housing predates 1980 and nearly a quarter predates 1950 — overwhelmingly crawl-space and brick-pier built, with settled walks and sixty-year-old service penetrations. That is pavement ant and acrobat ant country, and where a leak has kept framing damp for years it becomes carpenter ant country too. The newer pockets built since the 1990s are mostly slab, where the way in is an expansion joint or a plumbing penetration instead. Same city, same species list, genuinely different inspection.
