Cockroach Control in Norfolk, VA

Throughout Ghent and downtown, the close-set historic housing and concentration of restaurants gives German cockroaches the warm, moist kitchen environments this species depends on to thrive, since German roaches can’t survive long away from a reliable food and water source. In Ocean View, the humidity and dense coastal vegetation typical of a bayfront community give smoky brown cockroaches, which are strong fliers drawn to exterior lighting, exactly the outdoor conditions they favor before moving indoors. Berkley, annexed into Norfolk in 1906 and still carrying the aging infrastructure left behind by its history as an independent industrial town, is genuine Oriental cockroach territory — this species, often called the sewer roach, favors damp basements, crawl spaces, and older sewer and drainage systems more than any other cockroach species common to this region. Around Naval Station Norfolk, Willoughby Spit, and Larchmont, the large facilities, waterfront piers, and extensive drainage systems connected to the world’s largest naval base give American cockroaches, the largest common species, the big, moist, hidden spaces they prefer. And out toward Wards Corner and the Military Highway corridor, the drier suburban housing stock is where brown-banded cockroaches tend to turn up, since this species is unusual among cockroaches for not needing much moisture at all, often nesting in dry areas like upper cabinets, closets, and even electronics.

Two things about Norfolk make the outdoor species a bigger share of the work here than in a newer city. The first is age: about two-thirds of the housing predates 1980 and nearly a quarter predates 1950, which means original drain lines, crawl spaces and service penetrations that have been cut and patched for sixty years or more. The second is that the city knows refuse is the other half of it — Vector Control runs a Bulk Container Program enforcing the code on private dumpsters specifically, in its own words, to reduce pests. A dumpster with a broken lid twenty feet from a building is an American cockroach reservoir no amount of interior treatment will fix.
