Why Cane Bay Needs Year-Round Mosquito Control
Cane Bay was laid out on industrial timberland along Highway 176 around stormwater: the 300-acre lake system at Lakes of Cane Bay and a retention pond behind nearly every street. NOAA’s 1991–2020 normals for the Summerville 4W station put 52.70 inches of rain a year into those ponds. In the October 2015 rain the Post and Courier reported the retaining ponds that dot the Cane Bay subdivisions overflowed their banks. In Tropical Storm Debby in August 2024 the National Weather Service measured 17.27 inches at Summerville and Berkeley County told Cane Bay residents to shelter in place. A flooded pond margin is a Southern house mosquito nursery for weeks after the water drops.
With no tidal marsh, the pressure here comes from held water. The USDA soil survey of Berkeley County says 95% of the county’s soils have excess water in the profile, and the transmission-line survey of the Cane Bay corridor rated about 80% of its soils poorly to somewhat poorly drained, which is why a rut or a low corner of a lot holds rain for days. SC Sea Grant’s stormwater pond study found mosquitoes breeding in 34% of 52 stormwater facilities, 14 species in all, tied to ponds without mosquitofish.
The Asian tiger mosquito (per Clemson University, the state’s most common daytime biter) breeds in small containers around the home, and a community the Post and Courier says grew from roughly 4,300 residents in 2015 to over 13,000 has had a construction site inside it since sales began in 2007: ruts, debris and stacked material that hold rain. Census figures for ZIP 29486 show 17.1% of residents moved in within the last year, so lots nearby are still being finished.
Berkeley County Mosquito Abatement runs the public side of this, and its FAQ says it does not spray on a set schedule: trucks go out by landing-rate counts, light traps and service requests, at night, and staff larvicide standing water where they find larvae. Its spray log names Whitesville, Goose Creek and Moncks Corner zones, and Cane Bay is not a named zone, so a problem here starts with a call to (843) 719-4646. What the program cannot reach is the container-breeding Asian tiger mosquito in a gutter, a toy or a plant saucer on private property, and that yard-scale work is what a Vinx program is built for.
