Sullivan’s Island is a harder place to treat than its size suggests, because the island keeps getting bigger. The Supreme Court of South Carolina put it on the record: land is accreting on the ocean side at roughly seventeen feet a year, leaving houses that were once oceanfront “perhaps 500 feet or more” from the shoreline. When the Town took the accreted land under a conservation deed in 1991, the vegetation there was no taller than three feet. The same court record describes it today as thickly wooded — a maritime forest pressed against a residential street — and that strip is where much of what you call about actually lives.
