Clemson ties it to alpha-gal syndrome, the delayed red meat allergy that can follow a bite, as well as ehrlichiosis and STARI. Lyme disease comes from the blacklegged tick. Rocky Mountain spotted fever is the American dog tick’s and the brown dog tick’s, worth stating plainly because plenty of pages pin it on the wrong species.
Sullivan's Island’s flea and tick pressure is driven by its coastal Lowcountry climate and active wildlife populations. Fleas run year-round here; no hard winter freeze ever breaks the outdoor flea life cycle. Ticks stay active 10+ months of the year here, and animal movement between the maritime forest band, the marsh edge and neighboring yards is the main way they arrive. Animals browsing the maritime forest edge and the tidal vegetation margins drop ticks into the transition zones beside residential yards right through the active season.
The Town has put a measurement on that boundary, and it is worth knowing. The management plan for the protected accreted land now includes active maintenance of vegetation within 100-foot wide transition zones between the residential areas and the most densely vegetated parts of the property. That hundred feet is the tick interface, defined by the Town itself. The plan also describes the transitional shrub zone between dune and maritime forest as carrying a high number of avian, mammalian and herpetofauna species — which is the host population in ecological language. Ticks do not cross open lawn to find you; they wait at the vegetated edge for something to brush past. On Sullivan’s Island you can point at that edge on a map.

Black-Legged Tick (Deer Tick) (Ixodes scapularis)
Identification: Small tick (1–3mm unfed). Orange-brown body with dark legs. Poppy-seed-sized nymphs are the stage that most often transmits Lyme disease, and they are the stage tick checks miss.
On Sullivan’s Island: Found in the maritime forest band, in leaf litter and in dense dune and border vegetation. It needs humid shade, and turns up along wooded property edges, in leaf litter and in brush at the tidal vegetation margin. Most common where a lot backs onto the island’s maritime forest band or dense dune vegetation. White-tailed deer are the main adult host, and their movement through residential property is the main way it is introduced.
Disease risk: Lyme disease, anaplasmosis, babesiosis. Lyme disease in South Carolina is less prevalent than in the Northeast but cases occur, coastal counties carry greater exposure risk than inland SC. Transmission usually takes 36–48 hours of attachment, so removing a tick promptly is critical.

Lone Star Tick (Amblyomma americanum)
On Sullivan’s Island: Females have a distinctive single white spot on the dorsal shield. It hunts hosts more aggressively than the black-legged tick, questing at the tips of vegetation for anything passing. Common throughout South Carolina including Sullivan's Island’s wooded and brush-edge environments. It seeks out human hosts more readily than either the American dog tick or the black-legged tick. It can occupy brush and vegetation beside human activity areas in large numbers.
Disease risk: Primary vector for ehrlichiosis. It is associated too with alpha-gal syndrome, the red meat allergy triggered by tick saliva. Alpha-gal syndrome is diagnosed more and more often in South Carolina, and it is a peculiarly distressing one: after a lone star tick bite, the person reacts allergically to red meat, anywhere from hives to anaphylaxis. There is currently no cure.

Cat Flea (Ctenocephalides felis)
On Sullivan’s Island: The primary flea species on dogs and cats throughout coastal SC. Sullivan's Island’s coastal climate rarely delivers the sustained cold temperatures needed to interrupt the outdoor flea life cycle, keeping outdoor flea populations viable year-round. Heavy irrigation, dense ornamental landscaping, and the warm humid microclimate created by mature plantings throughout Sullivan's Island neighborhoods create excellent outdoor flea development conditions. A pet let out in January on Sullivan’s Island still faces flea exposure.
Life cycle: Only adult fleas, about 5% of the total flea population, are on the pet. The remaining 95% are in the environment as eggs, larvae, and pupae in carpet, pet bedding, and yard vegetation. American Dog Tick (Dermacentor variabilis)
On Sullivan’s Island: Medium-large tick (3–5mm unfed), reddish-brown with white or yellowish markings. The tick most often met in residential parts of Sullivan’s Island. Found across open grass, lawn edges, paths and the vegetation bordering wooded ground; it needs no heavy woods and turns up throughout maintained residential landscapes. Most active spring through summer. Dogs are its main host, though it bites humans, cats and other mammals readily.
Disease risk: Primary vector for Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever (RMSF), a serious bacterial illness that can be fatal if not treated promptly. South Carolina reports RMSF cases every year. Symptoms run to fever, headache and a spotted rash on wrists and ankles 2–5 days after the bite.
